So firstly, what is diabetes? Diabetes is a group of metabolic disorders characterized by high blood glucose levels which are due to problems in either producing or processing insulin.

Anyone can develop diabetes regardless of age, gender or race. Even though men and women both can share similar symptoms when suffering with diabetes, there are some common signs of diabetes in women over the age of 40.

Symptoms and signs that are unique to women over 40 are:

  • Yeast infections of the vagina, oral cavity and vaginal thrush. Some of the symptoms include, soreness, itching, discharge from the vagina and pain during sex.
  • Urinary tract infections. The most common symptom with a UTI is a burning sensation when urinating and cloudy or bloody urine.
  • Sexual dysfunction. High levels of glucose can damage nerve fibres and this can lead to a loss of feeling or numbness in different parts of the body such as feet, hands and legs. Sensation in the vagina can also be affected. This can result in a lower sex drive which can be hard for women over 40.
  • Polycystic ovarian syndrome. Symptoms of POS include weight gain, irregular periods, depression and acne.

Although there is no cure for diabetes, symptoms can be managed. Lifestyle and diet choices are important and alternative therapies can also be helpful.
