A staggering 1 in 3 Australian adults are at risk of developing kidney disease. As we head into Kidney Health Week, it is important to highlight that Australians, particularly those living with hypertension and/or diabetes, should be getting regular kidney health checks.
So, what part do kidneys play in the functioning of our bodies? They filter waste products, excess water and other impurities from your blood. They regulate PH, salt and potassium levels in the body.
Did you know that they also produce certain hormones that regulate blood pressure and control the production of red blood cells? So, you see, maintaining kidney health is extremely important to our overall health and general wellbeing.

There are certain ways to improve kidney health and keep our kidneys healthy. Below are some tips to help you on your way to healthy kidneys!…
- Keep Active and Fit
Regular exercise is not just about maintaining a healthy waistline, it also goes a long way in lowering the risk of chronic kidney disease. It can also aid in reducing blood pressure and boost heart health.
- Control Your Blood Sugar
Often, those who live with diabetes may develop kidney damage. When the body cannot use the glucose in your blood, the kidneys then have to work extra hard to filter the blood. This can cause damage to the kidneys. If you can control your blood sugar, then this obviously lowers the risk of any problems down the track. - Monitor Blood Pressure
High blood pressure is known to cause kidney damage. A healthy blood pressure reading is 120/80. Prehypertension is between that point and 139/89. Taking a look at what needs to change within your diet and lifestyle can help to lower and maintain a healthy blood pressure level. - Maintain a Healthy Diet and Lifestyle
Those who are overweight or obese find themselves at risk of a number of health conditions that can cause damage to the kidneys. A healthy diet that is low in processed foods, sodium and other kidney damaging foods, may help in the reduction of kidney damage. Focus on eating fresh ingredients only.
